History

Officially the Sylhet Agricultural University has started its formal function on 2 November 2006 following issuance of a notification by the Government as per requirement of the “Sylhet Agricultural University Act 2006” which was passed in the National Parliament on 3 October 2006. In fact, the faculty of Veterinary and Animal Science has come into being through the up gradation of Sylhet Gov...ernment Veterinary College (SGVC). The SGVC was established in 1995 and had been functioning as “School of Life Sciences” under Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet Bangladesh.

Sylhet Government Veterinary College, now Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Science has so far produced nearly 400 graduates. Graduates of this University have been playing a vital role in the development of Livestock production, up gradation, treatment, agricultural sub-system, and agro-based economy. They are involved in various national and international services ranging from civil service to RVFC (Remount Veterinary and Farm Core). Presently about 1500 undergraduate and 50 internship students are enrolled in this University.

The main task of the university is to tone up the quality and standard of higher agricultural education and to produce first rate agriculturists, agricultural scientists and technologists for shouldering the responsibilities of agricultural development of the country. To achieve the objectives over 90 percent of the recurring budget and the entire development fund come from the government through University Grants Commission (UGC).
